Photo by Miryha M. Gould (UC Irvine) with whom I briefly worked in Tom Rockwell's (SDSU) Hog Lake trench 1 in the Fall of 2002. The faults in this site near Anza, CA, are part of the San Jacinto strand of the Southern California San Andreas system. I am shown standing in front of one of the trench walls; you can see how sedimentary layers are offset by repeated normal component motion of predominantly strike-slip (out of plane) faulting in the past.
